Based on Japanese manga artist, Hitoshi Iwaaki’s renowned series Parasyte: The Grey is set to captivate audiences with its gripping storyline and dynamic characters.

The official staff for the Korean Parasyte live-action series, titled Parasyte: The Grey, announced on Wednesday, February 28, 2023, that the highly anticipated show will premiere on April 5, 2024, exclusively on Netflix. Along with this announcement, a captivating new key visual featuring the main character has been unveiled.

Based on Japanese manga artist, Hitoshi Iwaaki’s renowned series Parasyte: The Grey is set to captivate audiences with its gripping storyline and dynamic characters. The original manga, which ran from 1989 to 1994, garnered praise for its intricate character development and profound philosophical themes, interwoven with elements of body horror and dark humour. Over the past decade, the series has been adapted into a successful TV anime, as well as two live-action movies that received critical acclaim and accolades in Japan.

Parasyte: The Grey will explore the chilling tale of mysterious parasitic life forms that descend upon Earth from outer space, seeking to seize control by inhabiting human hosts. The story follows Jeong Su In, portrayed by Jeon So Nee, who becomes a victim of one of these parasites. However, when the parasite fails to take over her brain, she embarks on a bizarre coexistence with it. Goo Kyo Hwan will co-star as Seol Kang Woo, who embarks on a mission to track down parasites in search of his missing sister.

Renowned director Yeon Sang Ho, known for his work on the iconic zombie film Train to Busan and the hit Netflix series Hellbound, will lead the helm of Parasyte: The Grey. He will collaborate with Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area writer Ryu Yong Jae to craft a compelling script that stays true to the essence of the original manga while bringing a fresh perspective to the narrative.

The newly released key visual showcases the enigmatic spores of the parasites descending upon Earth, ultimately leading to diverse transformations in humans. At the centre of the visual is Su In, whose face is half-transformed, with the parasite inside her emerging like a tentacle. This striking image has piqued the curiosity of viewers, who eagerly anticipate how the symbiotic relationship between humans and parasites will unfold.

Director Yeon expressed his excitement for the project, stating to Yahoo, “In my twenties, Parasyte was a staple for those of us who were passionate about manga and animation.” In addition, he said that it is a huge honour and a dream come true for him to be able to build on it and create something new.

The author of the manga, Hitoshi Iwaaki, was quoted by Outlook sharing his enthusiasm for the Korean adaptation, “I am most excited that this is a new story. While I am the author of the original manga, I could also be a member of the audience that experiences thrill and awe. I am overjoyed that another grandchild is being born in Korea. I believe that this new story taking place in a different location will lead us into a world beyond my imagination.
