Jamshedpur : LGBT The community in Kolhan division has urged the state government to consider for monthly EWS (Economically Weaker Section) pension Since the plan, they are in dire financial straits in view of the pandemic.
Amarjeet Singh, secretary of a transgender organization called Utthan, said, “Transgenders mostly earn their livelihood by begging in trains and performing on auspicious occasions like weddings. But now passenger trains are not operating and weddings have been postponed due to the pandemic. It has been cancelled, there is not much money to make. Now, even though people are getting married, they are doing it on a small scale and we often don’t even know about them.”
He said that there are about 200 transgenders in three districts of Kolhan division who are in search of help from the government.
The organization has also requested for a permanent home under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for transgenders, who are currently living in rented houses in slums.
“A pension scheme and a house under the housing scheme will give us a good life and the community will feel empowered,” Singh said.
However, he expressed his gratitude to the concerned administrative officials in the three districts who helped him in getting the COVID vaccine shots. “In Jamshedpur, DC (Suraj Kumar) had organized a vaccination camp specially for us last month,” Singh said.
