Lessons on Tipu Sultan, Babur, Tughlaq to be cut from Karnataka textbooks

The Textbook Revision Committee in Karnataka has decided to drop the material as ‘Glory’ of Tipu Sultan. The committee will also remove sentences like ‘Tiger of Mysore’ or ‘freedom fighter’ referring to Tipu Sultan.

The committee has decided to stick to the facts and do away with the opinion and glorification of the former rulers.

Not only Tipu, but also the lessons on Babur and Tughlaq would have come under scrutiny during textbook revision. The space given to these two kings will be reduced.

Detailed paragraphs on the Mughal Empire will also be removed from the textbooks. Only a brief chapter on Mughals will be part of the textbook

The committee has decided to add chapters on the Karkota dynasty from Kashmir and the Ahom dynasty from Assam in the new syllabus.

“Whether it is Tipu or Shivaji, wherever we have got glory, that is not the truth, we have decided to stick to the neutral and straight facts. A lot of aspects were not correct on Tipu, we are leaving it in the textbooks from class 6 to class 10.”

The committee has also decided to remove the introduction part of the chapter ‘The rise of a new religion – Buddhism and Jainism’.

The introduction states that Brahmins used to offer sacrifices like farm animals and offered milk and ghee to the fire deity during homa and havan, which led to a shortage of food in the society at that time. The chapter also states, “Kshatriyas are those who encouraged new religions like Jainism and Buddhism to flourish in the country.”

Congress has termed BJP as saffronisation of history books. “The present history books do not support his narrative. They have never been a part of any historical struggle or freedom struggle. They are trying to reinstate their symbol in our history books.”
