Polling for the 60-member Tripura Assembly will be held on February 16 and the last date for filing nominations is January 30.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front may announce the names of candidates for the upcoming Tripura Assembly polls on Tuesday as the seat-sharing deal with the Congress nears completion, a senior party leader said on Monday.

Elections to the 60-member Tripura Assembly will be held on February 16 and the last date for filing nominations is January 30.

“We have already held the second round of seat-sharing talks with the Congress and it is expected to get the final nod from the CPI(M) state committee on Monday,” he said. CPI(M) state committee member Pabitra Kar said if things go well, the Left Front will announce the names of the candidates on Tuesday.

However, he did not specify how many seats the party would field candidates for in the assembly elections.

“We have organizational base in all 60 assembly constituencies of the state but other Left constituents and Congress will get proper seats…. “, They said.

State party president Birjit Sinha said the Congress would announce the names of candidates for the upcoming assembly polls on January 25.

“The seat-sharing deal with CPI(M) is in final stages and will be finalized soon. If all goes well, the party will announce the names of the candidates on January 25,” Sinha told reporters on Monday.

“Leaders of both the CPI(M) and the Congress have decided to field candidates where a particular party has a chance of winning. We are hopeful that the seat-sharing will be finalized before January 25.

When asked about the possibility of Tipra Motha joining the alliance, Sinha replied, “We have sympathy for Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishor Manikya Debbarma”.

In the by-election held last year, the Congress had supported Tipra Motha candidate Baburam Satnami from Surma assembly constituency.
