‘Leaving the non-striker crease early is real unfair play in the whole scenario’: Ashwin welcomes MCC’s decision to amend Mankad law

Star India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has welcomed the MCC’s decision to amend its laws regarding run outs at the non-striker’s end, saying bowlers should no longer have a “second thought” about dismissing a batsman. must, if it exits before the delivery is released.

The custodian of cricket laws, the Marylebone Cricket Club, earlier this month re-classified the controversial runout from Law 41 ‘unfair play’ and included it within Law 38 relating to lawful run outs.

This is one of nine changes made by the MCC to its code, which will be effective from October this year.

Ashwin said the bowler’s decision not to run out the last batsman could have a career impact.

“My dear fellow bowlers, please understand. The extra step that a non-striker is taking can destroy your entire career,” said Ashwin, who ignited a debate about the legality of the strategy by dismissing England’s Jos Buttler in an Indian Premier League match in 2019 , said in a YouTube video.

“If the non-striker ends up on strike, he’s taking that extra step, he can hit a six. While the current striker might have been out. If you take a wicket, you’ll go ahead in your career, Whereas if you hit a six, your career can go downhill, so the impact is huge.

“Therefore, bowlers should not have any second thoughts about dismissing non-strikers, that is my opinion. The non-striker is very specific about the non-striker not taking up that extra yardage before the bowler bowls the ball. They are giving allowance to the bowler. This is the importance of the rule.”

After facing criticism all these years for his controversial bowler’s run out of Butler, Ashwin was hopeful that people would stop ridiculing him, especially now that he has become the English all-rounder’s teammate at Rajasthan Royals .

“During my school days, if a boy was interested in a girl, his friends would shout the boy’s name when the girl passed by. Similarly, when I am playing, the crowd shouts ‘Butler, Butler’ at me. why do you guys do this? Now we’re teammates, guys.

Ashwin, who was picked by Rajasthan Royals for the upcoming IPL for Rs 5 crore, said, “In this whole scenario it is real unfair play for a non-striker to leave the crease early, not the bowler to run him out.”

Former India all-rounder Vinoo Mankad’s dismissal after twice running out Australia opener Bill Brown on the non-striker’s end came to be known as the “Mankad run-out” – once for Australia XI at the SCG in 1947. In a tour game against. And then in the second Test of the upcoming series.

“It has now been changed to run out. They (MCC) have destroyed the whole concept and termed it as a run-out law. When the batsman leaves the crease at the non-striker’s end, the bowler was expected to give a warning beforehand,” said Ashwin.

“Now they have declared that what the non-striker is doing is wrong and hence, bowlers can actually run them out if the non-striker tries to leave the crease before the bowler has delivered the ball.

“The bowlers used to feel bad doing this, wondering how the batsmen in our team would feel and what would the cricketing world think if we did. So, thinking about these results, they didn’t run him out.”
