Nation mourns the death of Lata Mangeshkar

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where she is being treated by Dr. Pratit Samdani and her team of doctors. He is under my supervision, said Dr. Samdani on Sunday morning. Mangeshkar, who was hospitalized for more than a month, worsened on Saturday after which he was put back on ventilator support.

Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday expressed deep concern over the 92-year-old singer’s health and said “India needs her”. “Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed deep concern about the health of great Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar and prayed for her speedy recovery,” the Congress said on its Twitter handle. “Generations have grown up listening to his melodious voice. India needs him,” the party quoted Gandhi as saying.

On Saturday, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray visited the hospital but did not speak to the media. Thackeray shared family ties with the Mangeshkar family. The singer was admitted to the ICU of Breach Candy Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 on January 11. He was put on a ventilator, but was taken off when he showed signs of improvement. However, his health deteriorated on 5 February, after which he was again given ventilator support.
Several high-profile personalities including Union Minister Piyush Goyal, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and NCP leader Supriya Sule have visited the hospital to investigate the singer.
Mangeshkar, known as the “Nightingale of India”, is the recipient of the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour.
