Kuruthi star Prithviraj Sukumaran: Malayalam cinema is no longer just for Malayalees

Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming production Kuruthi on Amazon Prime Video, believes OTT platforms are benefiting regional cinema immensely as they have a wider reach. He says that streaming has not only changed the way we consume content, but what we watch and what we see on screen, shining the spotlight on some of the best of Malayalam cinema.

“It is indeed the case that today, Prime Video is a showcase of some of the best of Malayalam cinema and there is much more about how Malayalam cinema is no longer just cinema for Malayalees – credit should go to the dreamer. I know for a fact that there are people who discovered Malayalam cinema and became fans of Malayalam cinema through it,” says Prithviraj.

Kuruthi, which will release on August 11, the first day of Onam, is directed by Manu Warrier and written by Anish Pallal. The crime thriller boasts of a talented cast like Prithviraj, Roshan Mathew, Murali Gopi, Shine Tom Chacko and Shreenda. The film follows Roshan’s Ibrahim, who leads a lonely life in the mountains in an attempt to leave behind bitter memories of the past. On a terrible night, a wounded soldier breaks into his house with a prisoner and takes shelter. When a powerful enemy burning with vengeance breaks into their home, Ibrahim is forced to face trial questions about his own beliefs and beliefs.

Prithviraj hopes that the release of Kuruthi will “further further” the trend of positive conversations around Malayalam cinema. Even though he said that Malayalam cinema has always been revolutionary, streaming has given it an opportunity to come to the fore.

“Malayalam cinema is traditionally known for creating great content and we are passing through what I would like to call a great phase where we are constantly coming up with great content and executing it well. I believe the Dreamer has given us a platform where the world can now find us. This whole conversation around Malayalam cinema may be very new for someone who is not following Malayalam cinema, but for us, it is just that we have finally found a platform where we Can showcase their content and their talents and showcase their skills. Technicians, writers, directors and tell the world that there is a small industry where we really punch a lot above our weight,” said the actor.

“Being the producer of this film, it feels like I am saying this not because I have produced this material, but if I would not have been or even if I was just playing the role as an actor. Nibha raha tha, bhi kuruthi hota special. It is a very personal and a very special film. For us Malayalees, Onam is always about going to theaters and watching a movie with our family and coming back and having Onam Sadhya It has always been like this since childhood. So this year the big Onam film that Malayalees will watch with their family will be Kuruthi.”

Talking further about his experience of being an important part of Kuruthi, Prithviraj said, “I knew from the very beginning that Kuruthi was all about performance. It’s about picking the right actor for the right role and I told Manu that it might take longer than we expected, but until I get the best actors for the right roles in this film, I don’t think so. I would like to do this. Get on the floor But as luck would have it, Roshan was the first person I reached out to. He immediately agreed. I don’t think I have gone for any other option for any character in this film. Anyone who heard this story or heard Anish’s statement immediately said that we want to do this. So it was too early. We shot the film in less than a month. And, we were very excited for what we had made and then this wait for this film not to hit the theatres, has been the most frustrating in the whole process. ”

The actor said that he eventually decided to release the film on a streaming platform as he was not very comfortable with the idea of inviting people to theaters amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Given the circumstances, I’m not comfortable coming in front of the camera and saying, ‘Hey, come to the theaters with your family!’ All I would say is to sit at home in the safety of your home and enjoy this Onam day with your family and watch Kuruthi together.”
