Amid high alert in Tokyo for Olympic Games, train commuter stabs 9 in ‘rare’ violent attack

Nine people were injured, including one seriously, in a knife attack on a commuter train in Tokyo on Friday, local media said.

Violent crime is rare in Japan, and the attack comes under tight security alert as the capital hosts the Olympic Games. An evening train was stabbed in the Setgaya ward in the west of the city.

Public broadcaster NHK, citing emergency response officials, said a 20-year-old woman had serious back injuries. The site is several kilometers (miles) from the site of the Olympic equestrian event.

The train was brought to an emergency stop after the rail operator was alerted, and a knife and mobile phone believed to be suspicious were found onboard.

The male suspect, also in his 20s, was allegedly taken in by police after he disguised himself at a nearby convenience store, telling the manager he was the perpetrator of the attack.

Japan has strict gun laws, but there are occasional violent crimes that involve other weapons. In 2019, a man killed two people, including a schoolgirl, and injured more than a dozen, who targeted children as they waited for a bus.

And in 2018, a man was arrested in central Japan after stabbing a man to death and injuring two others on board a bullet train.
