Prayagraj: About a year back, Vrindavan, Mathura and Chitrakoot-based artists, who used to perform various characters in Ram Leela and Krishna Leela at Magh Mela and other religious events, were without work and wages.
But this year, these artists and their make-up men have heaved a sigh of relief as they are currently busy in staging episodes of Ram Leela and Krishna Leela at the camps of prominent seers and saints at the ongoing Magh Mela.
A group of 22 artists from Ram-Shyam Adarsh ​​Leela Mandal of Vrindavan, is staging Ram Leela and Krishna Leela during day and night hours respectively at the camp of Charkhi Dadri, in sector 5 of Magh Mela with strict adherence of Covid-19 protocol.
President of Akhil Bharatiya Dandi Sanyasi Parishad, Peethadheeshwar Swami Brahmashram Maharaj told TOI, “After a gap of 12 months, a group of 22 artists from Vrindavan has arrived to perform Ramleela and Krishna Leela amid strict adherence of Covid-19 protocol.”
“We had not invited artists last year due to corona pandemic as Mela administration had banned the setting up pandals for staging of Ramleela or Krishna Leela as well as for holding religious discourses. However, this year has brought some relief and limited groups of artists are invited to stage Ramleela and Krishna Leela at different pandals.”
The artists were sitting idle and jobless for the past one and half year and some of even opted for temporary jobs to earn livelihood.
A senior artist performing role of Yashoda at Krishna Leela said, “We were forced to take up temporary jobs in a small factory as there were no staging of Ramleela or Krishna leela.”
Currently, more than 110 artists from various groups are performing various characters of Ram Leela and Krishna Leela at different camps at the ongoing Magh Mela
