Krea VC becomes third Indian to get distinction from American History Association

Prof. Mahesh Rangarajan, Vice Chancellor and Professor of History and Environmental Studies, Kriya University, Sri City has been conferred with the distinction of ‘Honorary Foreign Member’ by the American Historical Association (AHA). The AHA conferred Honorary Membership to Professor Rangarajan in appreciation of his extensive service to the discipline of History.

Only three eminent Indian historians have got this distinction so far. “Prof Rangarajan joins a rare group of historians who have been conferred with this honour. The first recipient of this recognition was Sir Jadunath Sarkar, a pre-independence academic who has been called “the greatest Indian historian of his time”. Only three eminent Indian historians have received this honor so far,” says Kriya Vishwavidyalaya.

Prof Rangarajan studied at Hindu College, University of Delhi for BA Honors in History and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford from 1986 to 1989. He holds an MA in Modern History from Balliol College and a doctorate from Nuffield College, Oxford. He has been a professor at Delhi University and Ashoka University. In 2011-15 he was the director of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. He has taught at Cornell University and the National Center for Biological Sciences, Bangalore.

Professor Mahesh has authored three books and co-authored several other books. The first ‘Fencing the Forest’ was published in 1996, and the most recent ‘Nature and Nation’ was published in 2015. Co-edited works include ‘Nature Without Borders’ in 2014, ‘Shifting Ground’ and ‘At Nature’s Edge’ in 2014. ‘ in 2018. In 2010 he was the chairman of the Elephant Task Force of the Government of India. In 2015 he was the recipient of the Dr. Triloki Nath Khosho Memorial Award on Environment and Development.

Founded in 1884, the American Historical Association is one of the oldest professional associations of historians in the United States.
