Kovid-19 transmission: Infection can spread tears of corona positive patients, study shows

New Delhi: A recent study suggests that tears from patients with and without ‘ocular manifestations’ may become a potential source of COVID-19 infection. Research from Government Medical College, Amritsar states that while respiratory droplets remain the primary source of transmission of the infection, the risk of transmission through other routes such as faecal-oral and conjunctival secretions cannot be ruled out.

The study analyzed and compared the presence of Covid-19 in the tears of positive patients with and without ‘ocular expression’, reports the Times of India.

‘Ocular manifestation’ is a condition of one eye directly or indirectly caused by a disease in another part of the body.

In the study, tear samples were taken from both eyes of enrolled patients within 48 hours of admission to evaluate the presence of COVID-19 by the traditional reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method of testing.

What were the findings?

This revealed that 17.5 per cent of 21 out of 120 patients under evaluation for RT-PCR tears were positive for COVID-19, of which 11 patients (9.16 per cent) had ocular manifestations and 10 (8.33 per cent) had was not. Any ophthalmic complaint. It states that patients infected with the corona virus can transfer the infection in the conjunctival secretion even if there is no infection in the eye.

The study, conducted in the latest edition of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, concluded: “SARS CoV2 may be present in the eyes with or without tears, so prevention is the most important aspect that is taken up by all emergency physicians and ophthalmologists to protect them. To be remembered. Patients and themselves while taking necessary precautions.”
