The Congress had promised that Khiragarh would be made a district within 24 hours if the party won the by-election held on April 12.

Hours after Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel won the Khairagarh assembly seat in the by-election, he kept his party’s promise and announced the creation of a new district of Khairagarh-Chhuikhdan-Gandai. The state now has 33 districts.

Within three hours of handing over the election certificate to the winning candidate, the chief minister announced the creation of Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai district as per the election promise.” Four new districts were created last year.

The official said that Salhewara and Jalbandha areas of Khairagarh assembly constituency will be made tehsil and sub-tehsil. The Congress had promised that Khiragarh would be made a district within 24 hours if the party wins the by-polls held on April 12.

In Khairagarh by-election, Yashoda Verma of Congress defeated Komal Jangel of BJP by a margin of 20,176 votes. Verma got 87,879 votes while BJP’s Janghel got 67,703 votes. The by-election was held in November 2021 following the death of JCC(J) MLA and former MP Devvrat Singh.
