Kerala University authorities have decided that students who go on maternity leave for up to six months can resume their classes without seeking re-admission.

The University of Kerala (KU) has issued special orders allowing menstrual leave and maternity leave for students above the age of 18 years. Women candidates can also avail maternity leave up to six months, after which they can rejoin the college without seeking re-admission. The university has also made a provision for menstrual leave and fixed an attendance limit of 73 per cent for girl students.

Students who go on maternity leave of up to six months can resume their classes without seeking re-admission, the varsity authorities have decided, reported a leading news daily. Meanwhile, the principals of the institutes have been assigned to verify the medical records of the candidates. Only after verifying their respective medical records, the Principal may allow the students to rejoin the college without University’s approval for the same.

Besides this, the university has already reduced the minimum required attendance for girl students from 75 per cent to 73 per cent.

A few days ago, the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur decided to approve six months’ maternity leave for students studying in various institutions. The decision on this was taken during a meeting at the university’s headquarters on March 4. “The government had suggested that state universities may sanction six weeks of maternity leave to students. However, the KUHS decided to grant six months leave based on expert opinion to ensure the health and safety of the mother and her child.

Explaining more about the leave process, Dr. Kunnumal said that students resuming studies after maternity leave will not face any problem like course break. They will also not have to submit ‘exemption certificate’ from the university to continue their studies, but their course will be extended by six months. The Vice-Chancellor said that earlier, KUHS was granting such leave on a case-to-case basis, but now the council has decided to make it a rule.
