Kerala sees 51,570 Covid cases, 14 deaths. Daily count remains above 50K mark

New Delhi: Kerala continued to report over 50,000 daily Covid cases, with the state recording 51,570 fresh infections, taking the tally to 59,83,515 on Sunday.

According to the state health bulletin, the southern state reported 14 Covid-related fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 53,666.

Among the districts, Ernakulam tops the Covid chart with 9,704 cases, followed by Thrissur with 7,289 and Thiruvananthapuram with 5,746 cases.

“At present, there are 3,54,595 active COVID-19 cases in the state, of which only 3.4 per cent are hospitalised,” the health department said in a release, quoted by news agency PTI.

Kerala has tested 1,03,366 samples in the last 24 hours, the government release said.

Meanwhile, 32,701 patients recovered from the disease on Sunday, taking the total number of people who recovered in the state to 55,74,535.

The health department said that out of the total patients, 5,27,362 people are under observation in the state, of which 12,628 are in isolation wards in various hospitals in Kerala.

Of those found infected on Sunday, 177 had reached the state from outside, while 47,778 had contracted the disease through their contacts. The source of infection of 3,178 is yet to be ascertained. 439 health workers are also included among the infected.

Of the new fatalities, 87 were recorded in the last few days, while 374 were designated as Covid deaths after receiving an appeal based on the Centre’s new guidelines and the Supreme Court’s directions.

On Saturday, the southern state had seen 50,812 cases. Kerala had reported 55,475 cases on January 25, the highest single-day spike in the number of infections since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.
