In the elections held on May 10 for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly, the Congress won 135 seats, while the ruling BJP won 66.

CPI(M) politburo member Manik Sarkar on Sunday said the Karnataka assembly election results are a “huge defeat” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who “projected” himself as the “saviour” of the BJP.

In the elections held on 10 May for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly, the Congress won 135 seats, while the ruling BJP bagged 66.

“The Karnataka result is also a big defeat for Modi ji, who projected himself as the saffron party’s savior. Despite all his efforts in the southern state, 64 per cent people voted against the BJP.

“For the past year and a half, the PM has been trying to ensure that the BJP retains power in Karnataka. There he participated in 30 programs. While addressing public meetings, he had to convince voters that voting in favor of BJP means supporting Modi,” said the former Tripura CM.

Congratulating the people of Karnataka for the decisive mandate, the government said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ went in favor of the party in the elections.

The government said that voters in Karnataka also objected to how Gandhi was disqualified as an MP and “forcibly evicted” from his quarters.

“BJP won the elections in Gujarat by playing the communal card, while it faced defeat in Himachal Pradesh, and also lost the urban body elections in Delhi. In Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram, the party won only 46 out of 180 seats. In Tripura, it lost 11 per cent vote share,” he claimed.
