Karnataka: Kundapur scribe gets jail in child abuse cases | Mangaluru News – Times of India

UDUPI: The Udupi additional district and sessions court, fast track sessions court-1, sentenced journalist Chandra K Hemmadi of Kundapur to 10 years and three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) in two sexual abuse cases respectively on Friday. Justice Srinivas Suvarna gave the sentence.
The court on Saturday sentenced him to three years rigorous imprisonment in one more case and acquitted him in another. He was accused of sexually abusing 21 minor boys four years ago.
Byndoor police arrested Hemmadi on November 28, 2018, on charges of sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy after taking him into the forests on the pretext of showing him the way to a waterfall.
21 victims lodged plaints against convicted scribe
The then Byndoor inspector Parameshwar R Gunaga had filed the chargesheet against Hemmadi before the court.
Took boys inot forest
Hemmadi was accused of sexually assaulting boys after taking them into the forests on the pretext of taking pictures for news reports.
As many as 21 victims had lodged complaints against him. Sixteen cases were registered against him in Byndoor police station, three in Gangolli police station and one each in Kundapura rural and Kollur stations under the Pocso Act.
Courts have convicted Hemmadi in 12 cases, and acquitted him in nine cases because of lack of evidence.
