AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam termed the DMK government’s decision to start the Kalaignar canteen as an attempt to “print” the ‘Amma canteen’ started by late AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa.

Amma Canteen was started by Jayalalithaa in 2013, affectionately called ‘Amma’ by supporters. ‘Kliner’ is a nickname given to the late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. “It is recorded that in future, 500 community kitchens will be set up under the name ‘Kalainar Canteen’. This is an attempt to eclipse the name of Amma Canteen, and is being done out of political motivation,” Panneerselvam said in a statement. Said, I strongly condemn this.

Tamil Nadu Food Minister R Sakkarapani discussed the idea of Kalaignar Canteen with Union Minister Piyush Goyal during a conference regarding state sponsored schemes receiving funds under the National Food Security Act. Sakkarapani also demanded funds for the 650 Amma canteens set up under the previous AIADMK regime. The Minister said that from June to mid-November 2.15 crore people have been benefitted under the Amma Canteen Scheme.

After the DMK came to power in May this year, a DMK worker was filmed trying to remove the board of Amma canteen outside an outlet. After the clip was widely shared on social media, the MK Stalin government reinstated the board while the party took disciplinary action against the worker.
