New Delhi:

The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia today shared a “good news” for the people of his home state of Madhya Pradesh. He said the state will have eight new flights on July 16 under the UDAN scheme, which focuses on connecting smaller airports with the rest of the country.

The new flights will be operated by SpiceJet, he announced, tagging the airline in his Twitter post.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation and the aviation industry are committed to take the UDAN scheme to greater heights, the minister said.

The government has set a target of operating 100 unreserved and underserved airports under the UDAN scheme, Hardeep Singh Puri, who holds the aviation ministry before Mr Scindia, said earlier this year. He had said that the government is also planning to start at least 1,000 air routes under the scheme, which focuses on connecting smaller airports.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, who left the Congress and joined the BJP last year, took charge as the 33rd Civil Aviation Minister on Friday. He took charge in the presence of Shri Puri.

Jyotiraditya’s father, Madhav Rao Scindia, was the civil aviation minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in the early 90s.

As the new civil aviation minister, Mr Scindia will oversee the disinvestment of national carrier Air India due to heavy losses by the airlines. He will also be expected to take a call on privatization of loss-making airports and initiate ways to boost the pandemic-hit aviation sector.
