Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool need to improve if they want to hold on to Premier League leaders Manchester City

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said his side can’t even think of being able to hold on to Premier League leaders Manchester City if they perform more like their performance in Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to Leicester City .

Klopp’s side slipped to their second league loss of the season at King Power Stadium and were trailed by nine consecutive league wins after beating Leicester 6–3 on Boxing Day, six points from 19 games this campaign. ,

“It was not our plan to give City a chance to escape tonight. If we play like tonight, we don’t think about catching up with City,” Klopp told reporters.

“But if we play our football we can see what it means (for the title race).

“I don’t have a proper explanation for tonight. Finding one is my main concern, not how Citi is doing.”

Liverpool had several chances in the match, including a Mohamed Salah penalty, but Egypt missed the Premier League opportunity for the second time, as well as some similar poor finishes from others in the red, meant Liverpool were disappointed.

Klopp said, “We needed some effort to not score tonight. We had a lot of chances.

“I didn’t like the intensity even in the beginning but sometimes we have started like this and we lost the rhythm and never got it back.

“I didn’t like my game a lot tonight so we have to do better. We just weren’t ourselves.”

Leicester have struggled to replicate their form over the past two seasons, when they missed out on a top-four finish on both occasions this campaign.

But he battled to get back into the game in leaders Manchester City on Boxing Day and worked incredibly hard again on Tuesday, against a very new Liverpool, and this time his efforts were rewarded with three points. Gone.

Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers said: “Given the context of Sunday’s game (against City), the players did a great job considering the recovery time and after playing at City.”

“The players were amazing how they coped. We had to defend our lives. I’m really happy for the players tonight.”
