J&K cadre senior IPS officer Basant Rath resigns to join politics

Suspended IPS officer Basant Rath on Sunday announced his resignation from the service on social media, indicating that he is joining politics to contest from Kashmir.

“I wish to resign from the Indian Police Service to participate in electoral politics. Please treat this letter as my request for resignation/voluntary retirement and process it accordingly,” Rath said on Twitter on Sunday. He wrote to the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir and shared it on Twitter.

In a post about seven hours ago, Rath wrote, “If I ever join any political party, it will be the BJP. If I ever contest an election, it will be from Kashmir. If I ever join politics, it will be before March 6, 2024.” Repeated attempts to reach the officer were not successful as he did not respond to phone calls and messages.

Rath was not available to answer whether he was seriously considering joining politics, as he had said a few years ago that he hated politics and certain characters who took to it.

Rath, who crossed virtual swords with his controversial posts, was suspended two years ago by the government on charges of indiscipline. In a series of tweets, he had, indirectly, even accused J&K DGP Dilbag Singh of indulging in corruption and amassing assets.

Rath was again at loggerheads with Srinagar Mayor Junaid Mattoo on social media site Twitter after he was posted as Inspector General of Traffic. Rath also got under the skin of some local politicians when he criticized his “unusual” style of working.

As a prominent traffic cop, he wrongly provoked many high profile people and for this he was given the name ‘Singham’. Rath also imposed fines against army, civilian and police officials for violating traffic rules.

In an interview with News18, Rath admitted that he comes from a very poor family, which struggled to eat two meals, but it was his mother who worked very hard for his studies. Later, the Odisha-born man took a degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University and cleared the prestigious Civil Services Examination.
