A magistrate court in Gujarat’s Mehsana city on Thursday convicted Vadgam Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani and nine others in a case of holding a rally without the permission of the police. The court has also imposed three months imprisonment and a fine of one thousand rupees each under section 143 of the IPC.

Apart from Jignesh, NCP leaders Reshma Patel and Subodh Parmar have also been jailed for three months. A total of 10 people have been sentenced by the court. The court of Additional Chief Justice JA Parmar, while delivering the verdict, said, ‘Rallying is not a crime, but rallying without permission is a crime’. Convicting the accused, the court said that the accused could have challenged the executive magistrate’s order before higher officials and then held a rally after getting proper permission.

Mevani led the ‘Azadi march’
The case pertains to July 12, 2017 when Mevani held a rally in Mehsana without permission. Mevani and his supporters led an ‘independence march’ to Dhanera in Banaskantha district over the beating of some Dalits in Una. The case of beating of Dalits had gained a lot of momentum then.

Kaushik Parmar, one of Mevani’s associates, had sought permission from the executive magistrate of Mehsana to hold the rally under the banner of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, which was initially given permission, but due to the apprehension of worsening of the situation, it was later postponed by the administration. was cancelled. Despite this, the organizers took out the rally.

Former JNU students union president (now in Congress) Kanhaiya Kumar also participated in this rally. However, Kanhaiya Kumar was absent during the hearing, so the court had passed an order to hold a separate hearing when Kanhaiya Kumar appeared before the court. Barring Kanhaiya Kumar and another accused, the court had started trial against 10 people, including Mevani, in April last year. One of the other accused has died.

Jignesh recently got bail in two cases
Jignesh Mevani recently got bail in two cases from the Assam Court. The first case was related to the case of an objectionable tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this case, he was arrested from Guwahati on 21 April. After four days of custody, he got bail from the court, but on the same day i.e. on 25 April, he was arrested again and sent to 5 days police custody for indecency with a female policeman. However, on April 29, he was also granted bail in this case.
