Ranchi: Jharkhand, which is battling a massive surge of Covid-19 cases, is set to roll out booster doses for comorbid conditions and frontline workers for the elderly as part of a nationwide roll-out from Monday.
The move assumes significance from the state’s point of view in view of nearly a dozen Covid deaths reported in less than a week. Two days ago, the state recorded eight deaths apart from a four-digit increase. Again on Saturday, it reported three deaths.
Officials of the state health department in Ranchi said on Sunday that the modalities for introducing booster doses have been worked out and will be rolled out in all districts from Monday. Though the state government has not yet formally released the estimated population for the booster dose that they are dynamic in nature and will change on a daily basis, sources said that in the first phase, around 6.5 lakh people are eligible for the booster dose. .
As per the protocol laid down by the central government, people with comorbid conditions above 60 are eligible for a booster dose only after their second dose has crossed nine months or 39 weeks. Sandeep Kumar Meena, Senior Immunization In-charge and SDO Dhalbhum, East Singhbhum said that candidates eligible for booster dose can go through walk-in at any government vaccine point or can pre-register on the Co-Jeet portal. “In the Co-Vin portal, one does not need to register afresh. In the same account which was used for vaccination earlier, they will get a tab for the booster dose, which they will have to activate,” he added . As per the rules, a person will get a third dose or a booster dose of the same medicine that they had taken earlier. According to estimates, there are three districts in Kolhan – East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan – have identified about 60,200, 29,602 and 29,986 beneficiaries respectively for starting booster doses in their areas. In Dhanbad, civil surgeon Shyam Kant Kishor said he has an initial estimate of around 59,000 people for a booster dose. “There will be no separate counter. Anyone can walk into the vaccine center to get it,” he said.
According to the vaccination bulletin released by the state on Saturday, out of the total 2.41 lakh beneficiaries in the age group above 18 years, 79% have received the first dose and 49% have received both the doses. The coverage between the age group of 15-18 years is 13.14% out of the target population of 23.98 lakh since the campaign started on January 3 this year.
