According to a CNBC report, the tech mogul has pledged $1 billion in grants annually to scientists, activists and other environmental-related groups through the Bezos Earth Fund. The grant will continue through 2030, with a target of providing $10 billion. The list of grantee organizations has not been finalized yet. But according to the Bezos Earth Fund, the protection of local communities and indigenous peoples will be the main priority for now.
“Nature is our life-support system and it is fragile. I was reminded of this this July when I went to space with Blue Origin. I’ve heard that looking at Earth from space changes the way I look at the world, but I wasn’t prepared for how true that would be,” Bezos said at an event in New York City.
First, the grant will focus on the conservation and restoration of the Congo Basin of Central Africa, the tropical Andes region, and the tropical Pacific Ocean, which are counted among the biodiversity hotspots and carbon stocks on Earth.
Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket carried Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark, 18-year-old Oliver Damon and 82-year-old Wally Funk In space on July 20. With this successful voyage, Oliver Damon and Wally Funk became the youngest and oldest persons to fly in space and that too in a single flight.
