JEE Main 2022: What not to do, mistakes to be avoided while attempting engineering entrance

JEE Main is one of the most prestigious exams India For admission in IITs, NITs and other institutes. To help students avoid the most common mistakes they make during JEE Main, we have compiled a list of common mistakes that many students must keep in mind while attempting the paper.

wild guess

JEE Main requires a thorough understanding of the subject in all three subjects. Students should answer each question using problem solving techniques that they have learned over the years and avoid making any guesses. There is negative marking for a significant part of the exam. These are the parts where students lose the most marks. Estimations not only lead to a poor overall score but also give students a false sense of accomplishment. Hence, not attempting a question is a better option than guessing.

poor time management

A poor time management strategy almost always leads to a poor score in JEE. After years of preparation and many test series exams, students get to know their strengths and weaknesses in each subject. Hence, they should plan their time in such a way that their score is optimized. One important strategy that has worked for most students over the years is that they attempt the toughest problems at the end of each section (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics).

exam stress

The difficulty level of JEE Main is almost always a cause of tension among the students. Even the most talented students feel some degree of stress before exams. It is recommended that students should keep their stress level to an absolute minimum before the exam. To accomplish this, they will need a good night’s sleep before the exam and they should also do regular breathing exercises to keep their mind calm.

not reading instructions carefully

Sometimes JEE question paper surprises students by introducing a new marking scheme or question type. Students should not panic in such a scenario as it affects their score negatively. To deal with such a situation, students must read the exam instructions carefully and come up with a strategy to solve the paper quickly.

not giving equal importance to every subject

During their preparation phase, students are inclined towards some interesting chapters related to a particular topic or a single topic. It is advised to give equal importance to each chapter of all the three subjects. It not only helps the students to find out the difficulty level of the paper but also helps in maintaining their confidence level while attempting the paper on the day of the exam.

Not Using Option Elimination Technique

To manage the time properly during the exam, students must be aware of the techniques that can be used to eliminate wrong choices especially in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). They should not focus too much on solving each and every question using first principles as it can be time consuming.

insufficient time for revision

To ensure that the paper is completed on time, students should allot a certain amount of time for the final revision of the paper. The duration of revision time should be decided on the basis of previous papers that the student attempted during the preparation phase. It is always a good idea to revise the paper during the last few minutes as it helps in preventing easy questions from being left unsolved.

negative mindset before exam

If a positive mindset does not guarantee success, a negative mindset almost always leads to failure, especially in a situation like an exam. JEE is all about having faith in your abilities and precise application of basic scientific principles. Having the fear of failure before and during the exam will always lead to bad marks. So, students should stop worrying about the result and focus on solving the problems in the exam with a positive mindset.
