Jaishankar to reply on debate on Ukraine situation in Lok Sabha today

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will reply to the debate in the Lok Sabha on the conflict in Ukraine on Wednesday. The Low House began a debate on the situation in Ukraine after RSP member NK Premachandran and Congress MP Manish Tewari issued notices under Rule 193.

Members of Parliament want the central government to answer questions about India’s current position on the situation along with the future course of Indian students expelled from the war-torn European country.

Earlier on Tuesday, four Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Kiren Rijiju, Jyotiraditya Scindia and General VK Singh – who were sent to Ukraine’s neighboring countries as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoys during the evacuation process, told the House informed about the evacuation. Jaishankar, on the other hand, spoke to his US counterpart US Secretary of State Tony Blinken over the phone on Tuesday to review regional and global priorities, including the situation in Ukraine, a State Department spokesperson said.

They agreed to closely coordinate developments and hope to meet again soon, Price said in a readout of the call. Jaishankar and Blinken regularly talk on the phone and meet at frequent intervals. Jaishankar and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh are also expected to be in Washington DC for the first two-plus-two ministerial meetings between the two countries under the Biden administration.

Meanwhile, last week, Jaishankar defended his decision to seek “good deals” for his energy requirement amid volatility in the market, while pointing out that even after the crisis in Ukraine broke out in Europe, Russian oil and has been a major buyer of gas.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made the remarks in the presence of British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss at the India-UK Strategic Futures Forum, soon after holding extensive talks with him on a range of issues, including the situation in Ukraine.

“When oil prices go up, I think it’s natural for countries to go to the market and see what good deals are in store for their people,” Jaishankar said.

“But I’m pretty sure that if we wait two or three months and really look at who are the big buyers of Russian oil and gas, I suspect the list won’t be much different than it was before and I suspect that We won’t be in the top 10 on that list.” Jaishankar’s remarks came on a day when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in India on a two-day visit.
