Jalandhar: That Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was facing heat within his cabinet due to the functioning of the Home Department, and Punjab When the police was creating dissatisfaction in the state Congress unit, it can be gauged from the fact that Jail and Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had written to him seeking an evaluation from the Home Department and Punjab Police.
Randhawa had sought this assessment almost a month after he and the then Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar had offered to resign during a cabinet meeting on April 26.
In his letter to the CM in the last week of May, Randhawa demanded a thorough probe into FIR No. 51 of 2021 lodged at Longowal police station, in which the name of his official personal assistant had also cropped up and the opposition was demanding his resignation. He expressed regret over the poor handling of the matter by senior police officers and suspected that the manner in which his name was allowed to be defamed, smelled of conspiracy.

However in subsequent interrogation his name does not figure in the list of accused…’ Hinting at the conspiracy, he said it was “a basic courtesy to inform us of any misconduct by any staff member of the police department.” minimum was expected.”
“In view of the current situation of mistrust and pathetic handling of recent cases by the Police Department like Bargari and Kotkapura etc., you are requested to conduct a time bound inquiry into the FIR No.51/21 of PS Longowal. . But also evaluate the home department, especially the police, for which we face a lot of criticism everyday.”
When contacted on Tuesday, Randhawa confirmed that he had written the letter. With the continuous relief to former DGP Sumedh Saini, the evaluation of the functioning of the Home Department and Punjab Police has become even more necessary. On Tuesday too, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered that he should be given a week’s advance notice if he is to be arrested in any case related to the Kotkapura police firing case.
