A video of Jagmeet facing water cannons had gone viral on social media during the farmers’ agitation, when farmers marched towards Delhi in November last year to protest against three agriculture laws enacted by the central government.
Police said that no case was registered in the past against the three arrested accused, including Jagmeet, his mother. Jasveer Kaur (50), and Jagmeet’s friend Ravinder Singh (23). Ravinder Mandi of Fatehgarh Sahib is a resident of Jasda village of Gobindgarh. Police said Jagmeet and Jasveer are residents of Durgapur village in Gurdaspur, but were living in Housefed Society, Banur for some time and were campaigning for the plebiscite.
The police have got six days remand. They are probing whether the accused had received any foreign funds for the purpose.
Police have claimed that the accused had recently campaigned for a plebiscite in Rajpura, where a langar was organized to mark the martyrdom of the sons of Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Gujri.
A case has been registered under sections 153A, 505(2), 505(3),120-B of the Indian Penal Code.
Rajpura DSP GS Bains confirmed that Jagmeet was the same person whose video went viral during the farmers’ agitation.
“The three accused were campaigning for the plebiscite in association with the banned organization Sikh for Justice (SFJ) and were also motivating the public to vote online for the referendum. Jasveer was a prominent campaigner. The bank accounts of all the accused are being scrutinized to ascertain whether they have received any foreign funding.
Patiala SSP HS Bhullar said they had seized 692 forms and pamphlets, plastic plates, spray bottles, pens and other publicity material for the SFJ referendum 2020. “Jasveer’s brother-in-law Manjit Singh Babbar was the area commander of the Khalsa International Group, while her husband Kuldeep Singh was serving as the superintendent of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking. Ravinder is Jagmeet’s friend,” Bhullar said.
Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee leader SS Pandher They said they would investigate the claims made by the police. “We will take serious cognizance if Jagmeet is punished for supporting the farmers’ movement,” he said.
