Israel’s Levontin 7 jazz club celebrates 17th birthday

levontine 7 will mark its 17th birthday with a flurry of gigs, at its home base and Tel Aviv museum, from July 1-22.

Since its inception, featuring internationally renowned jazz saxophonist Asif Tsar, pianist Daniel Sarid and conductor Ilan Volkov – Tsar now runs the venue alone – the club has hosted thousands of acts across a vast spectrum of styles and genres, as well as Tsar as well as rock, pop, reggae, indie, world music and experimental ventures in their own fields. All of the above, and then some, feature at the Lewontin Festival, which also features a handful of foreign artists.

Club faithful with a passion for jazz will surely have caught American percussionist Hamid Drake returning to full irrepressible flow at some stage or another. The larger-than-life Chicago-born multi-instrumentalist appears on July 10 in a two-set evening with Israeli pianist Milton Michaeli and bassist Assaf Shachori, followed by veteran saxophonist and longtime fighting saxophonist Albert Beger, fellow Reedman There is also a quartet slot. Ziv Taubenfeld and bassist Shay Hazan.

Compatriot veteran jazz drummer Lewis Nash is also in the festival lineup (July 14), powering a big band led by trombonist Jonathan Volchok, as is envelope-pushing German trumpeter Axel Dorner, while American saxophonist- Video artist Kris Jonas hooking up with Lost. Time Orchestra – also with Tsar, Michaeli and Shchorry in the heavy cast – should please lovers of sonic escapades to left field.

Who’s playing at The Levontin 7’s 17th Birthday?

There are some intriguing collaborations on the program, including singer-songwriter guitarist Amir Lev with veteran singer Efrat Ben-Zur and singer-songwriter Dikla from trading rock band Zirafot.

Stellar pianist-vocalist Shlomi Shaban Lewontin contributes to the festivities, as do pop singer Hila Ruach and singer-songwriters Atar Menor and Daniel Sun Krief, while rock singer-guitarist Ram Orion is a demonstrator by recording his trio show on July 12.
