Is Fasting Bad For Health? Doctor Shares Facts Vs Myths, Give Tips For High Blood Sugar Patients

Recently, TV actress and Bigg Boss 7 winner Gauahar Khan criticized American pop singer Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey Bieber’s comments on fasting during Ramzan or Ramzan. Justin and Hailey were caught laughing about the fasting aspect during Ramadan, where the ‘Baby’ hitmaker also said that it “deprives your body of nutrition.” In return, Gauahar posted the video on her Instagram Stories and wrote in the caption: “This proves how stupid they are. Only if they knew about the science behind it. And it has health benefits!” And he slammed the couple.

While Gauahar’s jibe grabbed headlines, the myths surrounding fasting have always been there. Dr Bir Singh Sehrawat, Director – Gastroenterology, Marengo Asia Hospital, Faridabad, addresses this issue. “Fasting has been going on since ages and there are many examples where fasting is associated with different religions. Basically, fasting is known to our ancestors since ages. Sometimes fasting helps and a beneficial form of fasting is intermittent Fasting,” he shared. ,

Intermittent Fasting: What Are The Benefits

Dr Sehrawat shared that intermittent fasting can be a good thing for people who are trying to lose unhealthy weight. “Fasting is not always as harmful as it is believed to be if done correctly. For example, during intermittent fasting, people are advised to consume snacks and fruits before fasting for a specific number of hours. Eat light food in the form of excessive calories that we have. Intake in the form of fried food, sweets, and artificial sweeteners – Intermittent fasting can help shed those extra kilos. It also gives our body a break from that regular system Where we are sometimes eating more than our body needs. Also intermittent fasting also helps in detoxing the body.

When Fasting Can Be Dangerous

Dr Sehrawat explains that if a person does intermittent fasting without stopping and depriving himself of energy in order to lose weight, it can be harmful. “If you lose weight fast, and lose a lot of kilos in a short period of time, it leads to the production of ketones which can harm the body. That’s why intermittent fasting is good, longer fasting periods, Constantly depriving the body of nutrients…that’s bad.”

High Blood Sugar: Fasting and Diabetes

When it comes to fasting for the whole day, doctors say that there are some diseases where people are advised not to fast for the whole day. “Those who have diseases of the digestive system – people with diabetes, liver diseases such as cirrhosis, people with diseases of the pancreas – should avoid fasting throughout the day. These are people whose glucose reserves are small, brittle and variable. So sometimes They can get hypoglycemia – low sugar which has various symptoms and the patient may even faint. Such patients should avoid fasting for the whole day.”

Doctors also recommend that people who have high blood sugar, if they are fasting, should keep checking their blood sugar level and take precautions if they feel dizzy.

Fasting: Do’s and Don’ts

Dr Sehrawat suggests the following:

  • Having a calorie-rich breakfast before starting your fast will last longer into the day. Include dry fruits.
  • After the fast, when you break it, do not eat much food. When we fast, our body becomes accustomed to a low energy state, and the body tries to conserve energy. So in a low energy state, when we eat too much, especially at night, it can produce too many calories and the calories can be stored as fat in the liver and lead to many diseases.
