However, Star challenged the Reliance-backed media conglomerate’s bid after which they came back with a fresh bid of Rs 50 crore, which was enough to seal the deal.

Sources have also confirmed that Viacom18 is looking to acquire Package C to ensure that there is no ad revenue leakage.

“We have already reached USD 5.5 billion after selling two packages. But the digital rights reaching Rs 50 crore per match price is massive. An increase of 51 per cent over the base price is unprecedented,” a BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

“Biding closed today at 6 pm and we are currently auctioning Package C, which has 98 games for five years in the non-exclusive digital category. There are 18 in the first two seasons, followed by 20 in the next two seasons and 24 in the final season. Then there will be Package D, which is the foreign authority for TV and Digital.

As per the rules of e-auction, the owners are given a secret code through which they bid. None of the BCCI office-bearers and employees are aware of the codes of the bidding companies.

Package D, which has a base price of Rs 3 crore for overseas TV and digital rights, will be a strong contender in Zee, which is being headlined at the auction by former BCCI CEO Rahul Johri.

“If Johri and Zee can win Package D and if Sony wins Package A, the Zee-Sony partnership will make a fresh start. But let’s wait till tomorrow,” said a source close to the auction process.
