IPL 2022: Trying to get on with the game, says Lucknow Super Giants pacer Andrew Tye

Lucknow Super Giants pacer Andrew Tye feels that there cannot be any kind of arrogance as a bowler in T20 cricket.

Tye, who won the 2018 IPL Purple Cap while representing Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab), went unsold in the mega auction but was later handed over to injured England pacer Mark Wood by the Lucknow Super Giants ahead of IPL 2022. Was designed as a replacement.

“As a bowler there is no place for arrogance in T20 cricket. You can absolutely nail the delivery you were after and somehow it finds its way to the limit. You just have to take those tough overs and believe you can do it,” Tye said in a pre-match chat with broadcasters Star Sports.

“Some days it kicks off and some days it doesn’t and it’s all part and parcel of the game. Every game, you analyze and try to figure out where you could be better or do things differently. Then, add information to the bank so that the next time you go out, you’re more equipped. Just trying to keep going with the game,” added the tie ahead of Lucknow’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the DY Patil Stadium.

Over the years, Tye has transformed himself into a specialist in the death overs due to his variety of slower deliveries and yorkers. But, according to Tye, beginning the change was not easy.

“I started to lose my way a little bit. My speed used to go up to around 140kph and then I started hitting the max speed of 135kph and then luckily my bowling coach (Matt Mason) came back home , I trusted him to change his action and make some changes for the better. At first I told him to get lost because trying to change my action at the age of 33 was never going to work, So it was probably career suicide.”

Tye, however, stuck around and made some changes to his action, which has benefited teams in T20 cricket, just as the Perth Scorchers benefited from the Big Bash League (BBL) trophy in 2021/22 Was.

“But luckily I tried it by going around and moving my arm way up my weight and pointing it straight down towards the batsman instead of down. You will be able to find that difference between my old action footage and my new action footage. Hopefully, you can see the difference.”

Tye said that he is trying to keep himself updated with the fast-evolving bowling world in T20 cricket. “Every time I go out there I try to do my best, the game is always changing and moving at different speeds. So, trying to keep it up or stay ahead sometimes is what I try to do.”
