Interpol selects CBI’s SP Director Praveen Sinha as representative for Asia in its executive committee

New Delhi: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Director Praveen Sinha was on Wednesday elected as a representative for Asia in the Executive Committee of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

Official sources close to news agency PTI said Sinha, an Indian candidate, emerged victorious in a tough election that saw contestants from China, Singapore, Republic of Korea and Jordan contend for two positions in the elite panel.

The elections were held during the ongoing 89th Interpol General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey.

“Today’s victory is the result of an intense and well-coordinated election campaign across the world,” a source told the news agency.

“Significant support of friendly countries was sought in bilateral relations at various levels and Indian Embassies and High Commissions regularly followed up with their host governments. Ambassadors and High Commissioners in Delhi were also approached in a similar manner,” the source said. “

Sinha, who was serving as the additional director of the probe agency, was appointed as the special director in June this year. Earlier this post was with Rakesh Asthana.

The post of Special Director is the second senior most post in CBI after Director.

A 1988-batch Gujarat-cadre IPS officer, Sinha has served as the acting director of the agency after Rishi Kumar Shukla retired on February 3. He held this position till the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal as the new CBI chief by the high powered committee. by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
