Intense cold wave tightens grip in Kashmir as Sgr, Kupwara, Qazigund, Pahalgam record coldest night of season – Kashmir Reader

Srinagar’: Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, Kupwara in North district and Qazigund and Pahalgam in South district of Kashmir recorded the coldest night of the season.

The severe cold wave further strengthened its grip in the Valley as the night temperature dropped further at most of the stations.

Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season at minus 5.8 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund and Pahalgam in south Kashmir also recorded the coldest night of the season at minus 5.0 degrees Celsius and minus 7.0 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Kashmir’s northern district of Kupwara also recorded the season’s coldest night at minus 6.0 degrees Celsius.

Other parts of Kashmir also recorded sub-zero temperatures. It was minus 2.2 degrees Celsius in Kokernag, while it was minus 5.6 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg.

Faizan Arif, an independent weather forecaster, said the lowest temperature ever recorded in December was minus 12.8 degrees Celsius on 13 December 1934.

He said that in 2018, on December 28, the temperature in Srinagar had dropped to minus 7.7 degree Celsius.

Significantly, in the midst of continuous drought in the valley, severe cold wave continued in the entire Kashmir.

However, the two-day rainy season is expected to end the prolonged dry spell in the valley from December 29- (KNO)
