New Delhi: India is likely to attend a regional conference in Doha on Thursday that will discuss ways to stop the massive spike in violence in Afghanistan and advance the stalled peace process, people familiar with the developments said.
Qatar is hosting the conference Taliban Earning wide regional gains in a war-torn country.
India’s invitation was extended by Qatar’s special envoy for conflict resolution Mutlaq bin Majid Al-Qahtani during his visit to the national capital last week, the people cited above said.
Al-Qahtani, Special Envoy to Qatar’s Foreign Minister on Counter-Terrorism and conflict resolution mediation, visited India to discuss the latest developments in Afghanistan.
He met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and JP Singh, ns Joint Secretary in the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran Division foreign Ministry.
Apart from India, Turkey and Indonesia are likely to participate in the regional meeting.
Qatar’s capital Doha has been the site of intra-Afghan peace talks and the Gulf country has emerged as a key player in facilitating the Afghan peace process.
The Taliban have been increasingly moving across Afghanistan, resorting to widespread violence, since the United States began withdrawing its troops from the country on May 1.
The US has already withdrawn most of its forces and wants to complete the drawdown by August 31.
India engages with several stakeholders and major powers on the latest developments in Afghanistan.
India has been supportive of a national peace and reconciliation process that is Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled.
It has been calling on all sections of the political spectrum in Afghanistan to work together to fulfill the aspirations of all the people of the country, including the minority communities, for a prosperous and secure future.
