“Industry, research institutes, relevant ministries, consumers, among others, are contributing significantly to the Montreal Protocol’s phasing out program of ozone depleting substances in India,” Choubey said.
Referring to the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which was recently ratified by India, the Minister said issues related to reducing industrial obsolescence and adverse economic impacts should be addressed while developing a hydrofluorocarbon phase-down strategy to implement it. should be addressed appropriately.
World Ozone Day is observed every year on 16 September to mark the signing of the Montreal Protocol, an international environmental treaty to phase out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, which entered into force on this day in 1987. happened.
This day is celebrated every year to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the ozone layer and the measures to protect it.
The Ministry said that Ozone Cell, Ministry of Environment, has been celebrating World Ozone Day since 1995 at national and state level.
Choubey also released the action plan to implement the recommendations of India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) for thematic area space cooling in buildings.
The action plan has been developed after mapping the recommendations given in the ICAP and after detailed discussions with various stakeholders including the concerned departments and ministries.
“The ICAP, the first of its kind in the world to be developed by the Ministry of Environment, addresses the cooling needs across all sectors and enlists actions that can be taken to secure both the environment and the socio-economic, through synergy of actions. can help in reducing the cooling demand. the profit. ICAP aims to reduce both direct and indirect emissions.
Choubey also presented a report on the cold chain sector in India and public procurement policies for refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment using non-ODS based refrigerants to promote non-ozone depleting substances and low-global warming potential refrigerants. India, as a party to the Montreal Protocol since June 1992, has been implementing projects and activities in a phased manner in line with the Montreal Protocol and its Ozone Depleting Substances Phased Program of the Protocol.
India has phased out chlorofluorocarbons, carbon tetrachloride, halons, methyl bromide and methyl chloroform for controlled use in line with the Montreal Protocol.
Currently, hydrochlorofluorocarbons are being phased out in accordance with the accelerated program of the Montreal Protocol.
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons Phase Out Management Plan (HPMP) Stage-I has been successfully implemented from 2012 to 2016 and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons Phase Out Management Plan (HPMP) Stage-II is currently being implemented from 2017 and will be completed by 2023, Ministry he said.
