Rohit Sharma-led Team India moved behind Babar Azam’s Pakistan to third spot in the latest ICC ODI rankings while Australia remained pretty on top

Team India has slipped to the third spot while Australia retained the top spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings released on Thursday. Pakistan are ranked second in the latest set of rankings after their ODI series win over New Zealand.

With the 2023 ODI World Cup slated for later this year, it will be interesting to see how the positions swap in the build-up to the World Cup.

Earlier, Babar Azam-led Pakistan had briefly moved to the top of the ICC ODI rankings, but they slipped to second after failing to clean sweep New Zealand as the Black Caps won the fifth ODI to level the series 4- Finished from 1.

Five-time world champions Australia have improved their rating from 113 to 118 after the annual update, maintaining a slight lead over Pakistan (116 points) and India (115 points).

According to the ICC release, “Before the annual ranking update, Australia were on top with 113 points and India were behind them on a decimal basis.

“Pakistan were third with 112 points and went on top of the charts after their win in the fourth ODI against New Zealand this month.”

Pakistan could have finished at the top spot if they had managed a 5–0 clean sweep against New Zealand.

With only three rating points separating the top three teams, an interesting battle at the top of the rankings is imminent in the year of the World Cup.

In the ICC’s annual rankings, all ODI series completed from May 2020 are considered “with series completed before May 2022 given a weighting of 50 per cent and all subsequent series given a weighting of 100 per cent”.

“This means that Pakistan have now overtaken India in second place, with their 4-0 series loss in England no longer counting. A 3-0 series loss in England in 2021 will lose their weightage has also decreased, helping them leapfrog India in the charts.”

India has been heavily affected by the 2-1 series loss at home against Australia this year.

While Afghanistan made a big jump to move up to the eighth spot and went past Sri Lanka (ninth) and West Indies (tenth), South Africa remained sixth and Bangladesh seventh.
