India and CARICOM Nations Discuss Wide-Ranging Issues in Ministerial Meeting

Jaishankar began his nine-day visit to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic on Friday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar co-chaired the fourth India-CARICOM ministerial meeting with his Jamaican counterpart Kaminaz Smith in the capital of Guyana on Friday and discussed a range of issues including trade, climate change and countering terrorism.

Jaishankar on Friday began his nine-day visit to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic by meeting his Suriname counterpart Albert Ramdin here.

“Co-chaired the 4th India-CARICOM Ministerial Meeting with Jamaican FM @kaminajsmith at @CARICOMorg HQ. Thank you to the Minister of Finance Guyana Hugh Todd for inviting us all.

He said that he appreciated the approach of his counterparts from the Caribbean countries of Suriname, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Grenada, and the representatives of Belize and the Bahamas.

“Discussed our wide-ranging regional cooperation including trade and economy; agriculture and food security; Health and Pharma; energy and renewables; Infrastructure, ICT and e-Governance; development partnership and capacity building; Higher education; Culture and the P2P domain,” he tweeted.

“Also exchanged views on important issues of climate change and disaster resilience; counter terrorism; Reformed multilateralism and closer cooperation in multilateral fora. Follow-up steps were agreed upon, including holding the second Joint Commission meeting this year, Jaishankar said.

Earlier on Friday, Jaishankar also met Dr. Carla Natalie Barnett, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and exchanged views on deepening India-CARICOM ties in traditional as well as new areas of cooperation.

CARICOM is an intergovernmental organization that is a political and economic union of 15 member states (14 nation-states and one dependency) throughout the Americas and the Atlantic Ocean.
