IND vs SA 2nd Test: South Africa captain Dean Elgar discusses controversial van der Dussen dismissal with match officials

According to reports, South Africa’s Test captain Dean Elgar and team manager Khomotso Masubele met the match officials during the lunch break on the second day of the second Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. They went to match officials to discuss the controversial dismissal of South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen for the last ball before lunch.

The right-handed batsman was dismissed by umpire Marias Erasmus off Shardul Thakur. Thakur bowled a delivery that came swiftly to van der Dussen’s defensive shot, but took only an inside edge to dive ahead with Rishabh Pant taking a low catch. However, replays showed that the ball could not have reached Pant’s gloves cleanly and could have bounced right in front of Pant.

Umpire Marais Erasmus did not doubt that it was a clean catch and van der Dussen also did not ask for a review.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Elgar and Masubele wanted to discuss the dismissal with Erasmus and Allahuddin Palekar, the on-field umpire, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and match referee Andy Pycroft. However, it is not clear what South Africans were seeking from the authorities, other than perhaps clarification on the dismissal.

Upon the resumption of the play, commentators were heard discussing that the decision was not overturned because the evidence was inconclusive. According to the ICC rules, “An umpire can change any decision provided such change is made immediately. Furthermore, the decision of the umpire at once is final.” The law does not provide an explanation on the period of time that is considered “expedited”.
