Test debutant Shreyas Iyer on Friday became the 10th Indian player to score a century on Test debut on Indian soil and the 16th Indian overall in his first innings of a Test match. Iyer scored his maiden century when he pushed a full delivery from Kyle Jamieson into the back covers and sprinted back for a couple of runs.
After missing out on wearing Indian whites with a moustache in 2017, Iyer made the most of his opportunity in whose absence Virat Kohli and Hanuma Vihari in the middle order. Kohli was ruled out of the first Test, Vihari was not picked in the team. Iyer started the day on 75 and started well with a boundary towards deep square and went close to five more boundaries on the way to his maiden Test century. His maiden Test century came off 157 balls and included 12 fours and two sixes. With this, Iyer became the third consecutive Mumbaikar after Prithvi Shaw (2018) and Rohit Sharma (2013) to score a debut ton for India.
Lala Amarnath was the first Indian to score a century on debut when he scored 118 against England in Mumbai in 1933, while Shikhar Dhawan’s 187 against Australia at Mohali became the highest score by an Indian on a Test debut. Rohit Sharma came close to breaking the record by scoring 177 against West Indies at the Eden Gardens later that year.
