IND vs BAN: BCCI Names Umran Malik Replacement for Injured Mohammed Shami

Umran Malik has been named as the replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami for the three-match ODI series in Bangladesh. Earlier, there was news that Shami has been ruled out of the limited-overs series and the 33-year-old might be ruled out of Test matches as well.

Now, BCCI has named youngster Umran Malik in his place who recently made his debut against New Zealand. He was dropped for the Bangladesh series as senior players like Shami were set to return after the T20s World where the cup India Were eliminated in the semi-finals.

“Fast bowler Mohd. Shami suffered a shoulder injury during a training session in the lead-up to the ODI series against Bangladesh. He is currently under observation of the BCCI medical team at NCA, Bengaluru and will not be able to take part in the three-match series.

The All India Senior Selection Committee has named Umran Malik in place of Shami.

India’s squad for Bangladesh ODIs: Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (VC), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Shreyas Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shahbaz Ahmed, Axar Patel , Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Sen, Umran Malik

Mohammad Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Umran Malik and Kuldeep Sen will form the pace attack for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh.

The 33-year-old Shami is an integral part of India’s ODI plans going into next year’s World Cup.

Captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid will be worried if the Bengal seamer does not feature in the Test series as India need to win every match to stay in the race for the World Test Championship final at The Oval in June.

A BCCI source said, “Shami’s absence in the three ODIs is certainly a factor, but the bigger concern is his absence in the Tests, where he has to lead the attack in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence.”

Shami has taken 216 wickets in 60 matches in Test cricket.

Umran Malik is one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket. He recently made his ODI debut in New Zealand where he played two matches and took two wickets.
