Shubman Gill justified his inclusion in the playing XI ahead of KL Rahul, scoring an unbeaten 103 which included 10 fours and a six.

Shubman Gill showed remarkable poise and maturity as he headed for his second century as India reached 188 for two at tea on the third day of the fourth Test against Australia here on Saturday.

Gill, who has been in scintillating form across all formats, justified his inclusion in the playing XI ahead of KL Rahul, scoring an unbeaten 103 studded with 10 fours and a six.

He added 74 for the first wicket with captain Rohit Sharma (35 off 58 balls) and 113 for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara (42 off 121 balls).

on break, Virat Kohli (Batting 0) was supporting Gill and India were still 292 runs short of Australia’s first innings score of 480.

Barring Gill’s century, which was up for grabs, the second session was a bit uneven as only 59 runs were scored with the old ball which made strokeplay difficult.

The pitch still batted well and Gill hardly faced any difficulty in negotiating the Australian attack.

Gill was hit long into the 70s before reaching the nervous 90s. He stepped out first and smashed it over Nathan Lyon’s head for a boundary before playing a paddle scoop to complete his ton.

Earlier, Sharma looked in good flow as he pulled Mitchell Starc behind square for a six and ran well between the wickets during the 21-over stand with Gill.

The manner of the dismissals was disappointing as deliveries from left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnmann (1/20) were not wicket-taking.

It was pitched short and Sharma could have hit it anywhere but his back-foot punch found Marnus Labuschagne at short extra cover.

Surprisingly, Kuhnmann did not get a chance to bowl in the post-lunch session.

Gill had no problem tackling the Australian attack as he found a steady partner in Pujara, who batted with some purpose during the first session before going into his shell.

The fast bowlers are not getting much help from the track and both Starc and Cameron Green did not make much use of the short ball strategy. The pitch is still on the slow side and the pace from the track is not much to rush the batsmen to play their strokes.

There is all the time in the world to rock back either to play a cut or to play a punch from the off side or to play a pull in front or behind square.

In fact, in the second session, keeper Kerry stood beside Green to prevent Gill from progressing and turning a back of length delivery into a half-volley.
