India coach Rahul Dravid said they have to be realistic about what makes a good performance on challenging wickets

India will need to improve both their batting and bowling during the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as they look to win the match and qualify for the final of the World Test Championship, head coach Radhul Dravid said on Tuesday.

India had won the first two Tests in Nagpur and New Delhi but lost the third in Indore and are leading 2–1 in the fourth and final match of the series.

“We have to work on both the batting and bowling (departments). If you see the Indore Test, 109 in the first innings was not good enough. It would have been better if we had scored 60-70 more runs. We also gave him a few extra runs in the first innings in that position and in those conditions. So we have to do better in both areas of the game,” Dravid said at the pre-match press conference.

Asked how he, as a coach, assesses players’ performance on challenging wickets, Dravid said he has to be realistic about what constitutes a good performance on such wickets.

“It is really about being realistic about what it takes to do well on some of the challenging wickets we are playing on. Not only here, but I think about the last several matches. I mean I think if you look at the last three or four years around the world, I think generally the wickets have become more challenging.

So you just have to be realistic about what the benchmarks are now, what the standards are, just understand that even in games like this.”

“A really good performance can change the game and we saw that with Rohit (Sharma in Nagpur). We’ve seen it here many times. So yeah, I think it’s about being realistic in our assessment of our batsmen and their averages and their numbers and we don’t really pay too much attention to that.”
