IND v AUS 2023: India Win the Toss and Elect to Bowl in 1st ODI; Umran Malik Misses Out

In the first ODI of the three-match series being played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India won the toss and decided to bowl first against Australia.

“It’s a nice track and there will be dew factor. We think we will do well in the second innings. I got some time off, the break is like gold dust for me so it gave me a chance to rest and improve It is important for India to play every game and every format. With this being the World Cup year, the ODI format is important” Pandya said at the toss.

“Good toss to lose. Glad to bat first as I didn’t know what to expect. We have to try our best to adjust to these conditions and get our combination right keeping the World Cup in mind. I think we played well in the back end (in the BGT series) and there were a lot of fresh faces to choose from. Not fully fit yet, so Mitch Marsh will open the batting.”

India would like to continue their good form in ODIs this year, having already won all their six matches in two separate series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

India will be without regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who will be away due to family commitments. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has already led India in T20Is, will play the role of captain in this match.

Pandya had announced in a press conference earlier on Thursday that Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan would open the innings for India.

“Ishaan and Shubman will open the innings. The wicket looks the same throughout the year. I have been playing here for almost seven years. It is going to be challenging as this wicket will give equal opportunities to both the sides,” Pandya told reporters.

Pandya also mentioned that the team is focused on continuing the way it has done in the past in bilateral series.

“I don’t think we’ve tried anything new. We’re trying to be a bit braver which I think we’ve done quite well in the last few series,” said the 29-year-old.

He added that the team members were happy with the management’s policy on workload management. “We have to trust our strength and conditioning coaches. I am a guy who trusts his team. These calls of workload, who should play when, who should not play, it’s entirely on those who are professionals. And it’s their decision.”

“All these people are confident that if they miss a few matches, they miss. No problem. This is the belief we have. If someone misses due to workload management, then this management has shown faith and trust in the players. I think that is the reason why the players who have gone out have come back with a lot of security.”
