Incessant overnight rain in Delhi-NCR; Azad Market underpass closed due to water logging

Parts of Delhi-NCR received incessant rain throughout the night accompanied by strong winds on Saturday morning, leading to waterlogging in many parts of the city. Rain continues in the national capital amid the monsoon season. Traffic has also been affected as roads in the national capital were flooded due to incessant rains. The India Meteorological Department said that Delhi (Safdarjung) recorded 73.2 mm of rain during 2.30 am to 5.30 am on August 21.

National weather forecast agency India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers in Delhi and NCR for the next two hours on Saturday morning.

“Thunderstorm with moderate to heavy intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of most places of Delhi, NCR ( Bahadurgarh, Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Noida, Greater Noida) Kaithal, Karnal, Rajaund, Assandh, Panipat, Gohana, Gannaur, Sonipat, Narwana, Jind, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar, Sohana, Palwal, Panipat, Karnal, Gohana, Gannaur (Haryana) Saharanpur, Gangoh, Deoband, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Baraut, Bagpat, Jattari ( UP) during next 2 hours.

Delhi Traffic Police also reported waterlogging in several parts of Delhi-NCR and informed that Azad Market underpass is closed due to waterlogging.

Delhi Traffic Police tweeted, “Azad Market Underpass is closed due to 1.5 feet waterlogging, please refrain from using this route. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Also, the movement of traffic on Minto Bridge (both carriageways) has been suspended due to waterlogging, said Delhi Traffic Police.

The IMD advised to ‘stay indoors, close windows and doors and avoid travel if possible’ and advised not to take shelter under trees.

Earlier on Friday, the Meteorological Department has also issued Orange Alert for Saturday and Yellow Alert for Sunday. The department has issued a green alert from August 23 to August 26.

The IMD uses four color codes: green means all is well while yellow indicates severe weather. It also suggests that the weather may be inclement, causing disruption in day-to-day activities.

The Orange Alert is issued as a warning of extreme inclement weather, which is likely to cause traffic disruptions with road and drain closures and power supply interruptions. Red occurs when extremely inclement weather conditions are sure to disrupt travel and power and pose a significant risk to life.
