IITs start recruitment drive for reserved category after education ministry notice

Following the instructions of the Ministry of Education for the recruitment of reserved category teachers, many Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) A special recruitment drive has been started to fill the vacant posts of teachers. IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT (Banaras Hindu University), and IIT Ropar have released special recruitment notification on their respective portals.

This campaign is being run in various departments at the level of assistant, associate and professor.

The MoE, in its letter on August 23, directed all centrally funded higher education institutions such as IITs, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) to recruit faculty members from reserved categories by September 2022.

Applications are invited from candidates having PhD degree with first class in the appropriate branch with “very good academic record”. Applicants will also need prescribed work experience in the relevant field. For Assistant Professor, it is necessary to have at least three years of experience in teaching, research or industry.

As per the central law, these institutions are required to implement 27 per cent reservation in teaching staff for OBC candidates, 15 per cent for Scheduled Castes and 7.5 per cent for ST candidates. However, none of the 22 IITs, including Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Kharagpur, follow reservation in their faculty positions, according to RTI data reported by Hindustan Times. None of these institutions has more than six teachers from the Scheduled Tribe community, while 18 of them have 10 or fewer Scheduled Caste candidates. Seven IITs have 10 or less faculty members from the OBC community.

Last year, the Center had asked all educational institutions, including IITs and IIMs, to implement the reservation policy in faculty recruitment after being questioned by a parliamentary panel. The committee constituted of representatives from various IITs and concerned ministries sought exemption from reservation policies and caste-based reservation in faculty recruitment under the Schedule to the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Act 2019.
