IISER Kolkata issues statement after suicide of PhD student, calls scientific community a loss

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata has issued a statement after Subhadeep Roy, an integrated PhD student of the Department of Physics (DPS), was found dead inside the institute’s laboratory in West Bengal’s Nadia district last week. “In Subhadeep Roy, we lost a dynamic student. His loss was a loss to the entire scientific community,” the statement said. The institute said it had formed an internal committee to investigate the matter.

“IISER deeply regrets the sad demise of Mr. Subhadeep Roy, an integrated PhD student of the Department of Physics (DPS). We would like to share a statement prepared by DPS which represents the views of the Institute.”

After Subhadeep’s mother lodged an FIR at Haringhata police station, they launched an investigation and found a note in which the victim had alleged negligence against a professor under whom he was pursuing his integrated PhD programme. The 29-year-old student was researching his thesis under the supervision of Professor Chiranjeeb Mitra.

The institute said that the professor has completed his PhD from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and post doctorate from Cambridge University. Since joining IISER, he had previously supervised five PhD students from his laboratory. “There is no record of any allegation of misbehavior or harassment against Prof Mitra from any of his past students or any of his current students,” an official statement from the institute said.

It said that IISER Kolkata wants the investigation to be conducted “in a fair and impartial manner, on the basis of evidence and facts” and asked not to spread any misinformation and rumours.

Subhadeep joined IISER Kolkata in 2014 after completing his B.Sc. After completing his master’s degree from the institute, he began thesis research for his PhD degree. He was Senior Research Fellow, CSIR. He had three first or lead author publications with his supervisor Professor Mitra and was involved in the development of a state-of-the-art laboratory for quantum information processing and the establishment of a pulsed ESR.

According to an earlier statement from IISER Kolkata, “Around 11 on Monday, some students found the laboratory door locked from inside. When the security guard broke the door, he saw the student lying on the ground. His face had turned black. He was taken to a hospital where doctors said he died several hours ago.”
