‘If it happens, I will do my best to take Indian cricket forward’: KL Rahul on Test captaincy

Premier batsman KL Rahul said that he has not seriously thought of leading the Indian team but if he gets a chance, he will try his best to take the team forward. With Virat Kohli relinquishing the Test captaincy, Team India is in a difficult position to appoint a new captain. Rohit Sharma and Rahul are at the fore in the race to captain the Test team. However, Rohit’s workload management could give Rahul an edge in the race.

Rahul admitted that leading the country is like a dream for any sportsperson and it would be a huge responsibility if given to him.

“Leading the country is a dream come true for any sportsperson and something that he will cherish for a long time. I am no different,” Rahul, who is the ODI captain for the series against South Africa, said on the eve of the first match here.

“It would be a big responsibility if it is given to me and something that is really exciting for me, but I am not really looking for anything at the moment, but if it happens, then I will give Team India and Indian cricket a chance. I will try my best to move forward. Forward to the best of my ability. Right now I am concentrating on the ODI series against South Africa.”

Rahul, who led the team in Johannesburg in the former’s absence, said he didn’t care too much about his name as a possible successor until articles began to be published.

“I didn’t think about it until articles with the name started popping up,” he said.

India lost the Test match in Johannesburg where Rahul led the side, however, the opener said it was a great learning experience for him.

He said, “I had the opportunity to lead the Test team in Johannesburg, which was really special, obviously the result was not in our favor, but it was a great learning experience for me, which I will always be proud of. “

Regarding his approach as a captain, Rahul said that he will play one match at a time.

“I’m not someone who has a lot of plans. I don’t really have goals. I like to take it just one match at a time that’s how I played my cricket as a player and that’s how I play my team.” I would also love to lead.”

The 29-year-old further talked about what he learned about captaincy while playing under Kohli.

“Obviously, we have great captains in MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli and they have already shown us the way. Under Virat, we have done extraordinary things as a white-ball team, so the pattern is already set and it is important for us to build on that and keep getting better as a team. We have shown over the years that we are a team that is hungry to perform, keep getting better and keep improving. It will just be about getting better at the things that we are already doing and we already had an honest conversation about what things we need to improve as an individual and as a team. For me as a leader, it will just be about supporting people and putting people in a mindset where they are excited and where they will go out there and do special things.”
