The biggest reason for Delhi Capitals’ success in this season of the Indian Premier League has been the lethal combination of Axar Patel and R Ashwin. Both the spinners have complimented each other very well in the shortest format, as they did in the Test series against England earlier this year.
Speaking about their combination, Axar Patel took a deep dive into explaining the skills of both the players. Akshar says that a primary reason for the success of both is the variety that they bring and since they are both completely different, their angles and trajectories are also different, making them a solid combination.
In an interview with The Times of India, Akshar said that Ashwin approaches sports with a different mindset and if he had even half the skills of an off-spinner, he would have been a much better spinner. The left-arm spinner explained how Ashwin has different plans for each batsman and thinks deeply when he sets up his field.
“If I had half his skills, I would have done much better. I try to choose how his mind works in different situations. He has different plans for every batsman. Very hi deep thinking. (He thinks deeply),” said Akshar.
Before the playoffs, the pair had already picked up 42 wickets, with Axar taking 24 wickets, while Ashwin took 18.
Akshar has played 53 international matches so far while Ashwin has 236 international matches experience.
Ashwin has taken 413 wickets in 79 Test matches at an average of 24.56 and a strike rate of 52.40.
