ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022: Captain Meg Lanning says Australia deserved to win

Australia captain Meg Lanning believed that her team deserved a 71-run victory in the final against England and the long-standing fixture that won the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

In the tournament, Australia were unbeaten in the league stage and extended their winning streak to the semi-finals as well as the final to win their seventh ODI World Cup title.

“We have been extremely consistent over a long period of time and have done so well coming out throughout the tournament. I think we deserve to win tonight. We knew we had to contribute a lot of people throughout the tournament.”

“We had some young players come in and they made a direct impact which is great for the team and it is great for more experienced players to motivate them to get better. It took a lot of support from the coaching staff and support staff to get us to this point off the field,” Lanning said after the match.

In the final at Hagley Oval, Australia’s victory came with wicketkeeper-batsman Alyssa Healy’s blistering 138-ball 170 as she posted a mammoth score of 356/5 after batting first.

“It was unbelievable (Healy’s knock), to do this (especially) in the World Cup final. Some of those shots that she was playing were ridiculous and I think she set up the base really well and that’s something we’ve talked about a lot as a batting group, patiently Took the job and built the platform to explode on the backend and this is what happened. Today,” Lanning observed.

Lanning praised England vice-captain Nat Sciver for keeping the defending champions in the hunt for an unbeaten 148. “He (Nat Sciver) is an incredible player and has played a really special innings, any other day it would potentially be a match-winning innings. We knew England would hit us hard and we expected a contest And we definitely got that.

Lanning, who marked his 100th ODI appearance during Sunday’s final, praised leg-spinner Alana King and teenage pacer Darcy Browne, tear-jerker pacer Tayla Vlaminck, leg-spinner Georgia Wareham and left-arm spinner Sophie Molyneux. Like moving forward in the absence of players. Mega Event.

“We have some good depth in our squad. Tay (Vlaeminck), Wolf (Wareham) and Soph (Molineux), big shoutout to you guys. We’ve seen Alana King and Darcy Brown come and dominate the team and rise up, so it’s important not to rely on one or two players. Injuries are unfortunately part of the game and we have been able to cover it up this time.”

Lanning expressed his gratitude to his side as well as support staff members along with England, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and New Zealand for hosting the tournament successfully.

“Thanks to Heather and England for today’s competition, thanks to everyone in the ICC, New Zealand Cricket for taking this tournament forward, it’s been an incredible effort, a lot of work is going on behind the scenes. I want to thank our coaches and support staff who put so much time and effort behind the scenes to wake us up and be able to play cricket. Well done for the team and we will definitely enjoy it.”

Lanning signed off saying Australia would celebrate the win and sink into the spirit of being a 50-over World Cup winner for the first time since 2013.

“We will celebrate this first, it is important to make sure to look back at this period and see how successful it has been because a lot of hard work has gone into it and it has not been easy. The whole thing has had its ups and downs, this little block. It’s nice to be able to reach the end of the year and be able to say that we are World Cup champions.”
