Although the decision polarized many on Twitter, with some praising the skipper and others bashing him, the former Sri Lankan cricketer praised Rohit’s sporty gesture.

India pacer Mohammed Shami tried to run out Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka at the non-striker’s end in the first ODI here on Tuesday but his skipper Rohit Sharma intervened and withdrew the appeal.

It happened on the fourth ball of the last over of Sri Lanka’s tough 374-run target when Shanaka was two runs away from his century. Shanaka supported Kasun Rajitha for a long distance and was run out by Shami at the non-striker’s end.

But Rohit came and withdrew the appeal after a brief chat with Shami.

Although the decision polarized many on Twitter, with some praising the captain and others bashing him, former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya praised Rohit’s sporty gesture.

“The real winner was Rohit Sharma’s sportsmanship in refusing to get run out. I take off my hat to you!,” tweeted Jayasuriya.

Shanaka took the strike on the next ball and completed his century with a boundary. But his 108 not out from 88 balls went in vain as Sri Lanka collapsed to 306 for 8 and suffered a 67-run defeat.

A run out at the bowler’s end was no longer considered ‘unfair play’ since October last year after the ICC amended its rulebook.

Such a run-out when the bowler tries to move out of the crease before releasing the ball is known as ‘Mankading’, reminiscent of the first such dismissal made by Vinoo Mankad , when he ran out Bill Brown at the non-striker’s end. Like this twice in the Test series against Australia in 1947-48.
